SUSHI FAVES
Despite Boston’s reputation for seafood, sushi never gets any props in this town. Nevertheless, there are a number of excellent sushi bars and restaurants in the Hub that serve this Japanese delicacy.

  1. Fugakyu
1280 Beacon St., Brookline, 617-734-1268. Brookline might be the mecca of sushi joints, Mr. Sushi, Jae’s and this popular Japanese eatery among them. Pull up a seat at the floating boat sushi bar and enjoy tantalizing specialties like caterpillar maki (eel and avocado) and the house special (salmon, tuna, clam and octopus).

  2. Ginza
16 Hudson St., Chinatown, 617-338-2261; 1002 Beacon St., Brookline, 617-566-9688. This is the mothership. Located in Chinatown with a second outpost in Brookline, the restaurant is a favorite of many sushi-loving Bostonians. Dine on the freshest raw fish and tempura, with specialties like the Ginza Surprise, boasting a selection of exotic sushi rolls and sashimi.

  3. Gyuhama
827 Boylston St., 617-437-0188. This Back Bay institution is known for its late-night “rock ’n’ roll” sushi, where the music is cranked up and the chefs create an array of tasty maki rolls and nigiri sushi.

  4. Shino Express
144 Newbury St., 617-262-4530. Cheap and easy says it all. If you need a quiet break from your shopping spree on Newbury Street, pull up a stool at this tiny, subterranean sushi bar for freshly prepared maki rolls and some fun specials.

  5. Typhoon
725 Boylston St., 617-859-8181. This Boylston Street eatery serves a bevy of Asian cuisine, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai. But its sushi is also a standout—everything from tako (octopus) to unagi (fresh water eel) to the delectable spider crab roll.
