STEAKING
A CLAIM
The best steakhouse
in meat-and-potatoes Boston? That debate may be as heated as
the Sox-Yankees rivalry so it’s hard to pick just one. Here
are a few of our favorite places to find the best top
sirloin, porterhouse or New York strip in the most
exquisite of surroundings.
- Grill 23 & Bar
161 Berkeley St., 617-542-2255. This carnivore’s
temple, bedecked with Corinthian marble columns and
vaulted ceilings, attracts powerbrokers and the
political elite to its sprawling digs. An enormous wine
list, sumptuous, perfectly cooked meat and delectable
side dishes make this one of the best steakhouses in the
city.
- The Oak Room
Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, 617-267-5300. We can’t
figure out what we cherish more: the posh Edwardian
decor, the pitch-perfect service, or the award-winning
cuisine—ranging from steak specialties like
Chateaubriand for two, to a best-of-both-worlds surf ’n’
turf.
- Capital Grille
359 Newbury St., 617-262-8900; Chestnut Hill,
617-928-1400. A chain, yes. But this gem is no
cookie-cutter beef palace. The house specialty, a
porterhouse comprised of tender filet mignon and robust
New York strip, alone makes it worth a visit.
- Abe & Louie’s
793 Boylston St., 617-536-6300. Swanky, circular
leather booths, dark wood accents and waiters pushing
dessert carts create a New York-style chophouse
atmosphere. Did we mention that they cook a pretty mean
steak as well?
- Bonfire
Park Plaza Hotel, 617-262-3473. Todd English’s
Latin-themed steakhouse had a rocky start a few years
back, but now seems to be finding its groove. You’ll
love the bordello-by-way-of-roadhouse look and the
tantalizing menu—from the creative taco platters to the
southwest-themed steaks and smoked meats.
