 YOU
SCREAM, ICE CREAM
It’s hard to
believe that Boston, with its harsh and snowy winters, is
the ice cream capital of the nation. Yet that’s what the
fact-checkers claim: We Bostonians eat more ice cream per
capita than anyone else in the country. Witness the slew of
ice cream parlors that dominate the scene, including these
favorites.
- Herrell’s
15 Dunster St.,
Harvard Square, 617-497-2179; other locations. Steve
Herrell is credited with starting the premium ice cream
craze some 20 years ago. This landmark parlor features
some 90 custom-made flavors as well as its trademark
“smoosh-ins”—candy and other goodies mashed into the ice
cream.
- JP Licks
352 Newbury St.,
617-236-1666; 659 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain,
617-524-6740; other locations. This local favorite
boasts a cow head protruding from its flagship JP locale
and spinning teacup seats at its Newbury Street parlor.
You’ll love the atmosphere, but the lip-smacking ice
cream, non-fat frozen yogurt and multitude of toppings
is the real draw.
- Toscanini’s
1310 Mass. Ave., Harvard Square, 617-354-9350; other
locations. This award-winning ice cream shop attracts
both foodies and families to its popular stores. But you
won’t find any childish bubblegum-style flavors here.
Tosci’s tends towards gelati-rich flavors like khulfee,
saffron and burnt caramel.
- Emack and Bolio’s
290 Newbury St., 617-536-7127; other locations. This
longtime local chain is known for its all natural
non-fat ice cream and its popular yogurt-based fruit
smoothies. Ice cream flavors include “the original” Oreo
cookie, grasshopper pie and vanilla bean speck.
- Ben & Jerry’s
174 Newbury St, 617-536-5456; other locations. You
probably don’t need any introduction to this famous duo.
Their decadently flavored ice cream is made with
all-natural ingredients, and its flavors, like chunky
monkey and cherry Garcia, are known the world over.
