GONE
TO THE DOGS
The exact
ingredients and processes that go into making a hot dog may
remain suspect, but the mystery hasn’t stopped this tasty
treat from becoming one of America’s favorite foods. Here
are a few Hub hangouts that do dogs right.
- SPIKE'S JUNKYARD DOGS,
108 Brighton Ave., Allston, 617-254-7700. This corner
take-out joint offers a mouth-watering selection of
premium jumbo franks, featuring such creative
combinations as the Texas Ranger (with bacon and
barbecue sauce) and the Reuben (Russian dressing,
sauerkraut and swiss cheese), or try the customized
Sinatra (“Your Way,” of course).
- CODE 10, 1638
Washington St., 617-375-6333. The name may be police
code for lunch break, but this South End spot serves
delectable Pearl and Hebrew National dogs (with chili,
sauerkraut and other classic toppings, if you so please)
for lunch and dinner.
- JASPER WHITE'S SUMMER
SHACK, 50
Dalton St., 617-867-9955; 149 Alewife Brook Parkway,
Cambridge, 617-520-9500. Franks and beans are a New
England tradition, and this old-school seafood joint
doesn’t disappoint—and neither do the corn dogs.
- JOE & NEMO,
426 Washington St., 617-470-9426. First opened in
now-defunct Scollay Square in 1909, Joe & Nemo serves
dogs in a variety of styles (all-beef, beef and pork,
natural casings), all on soft, steamed buns.
- FENWAY PARK, 4
Yawkey Way, 617-482-4SOX. Sure you can buy them at your
local grocery store, but to be honest, sometimes it’s
the setting that makes a hot dog the best. And what
better setting than historic Fenway during a Sox game? A
Fenway Frank with a healthy smear of Gulden’s Spicy
Brown Mustard always hits a home run, no matter what the
score.
