 HOLLYWOOD
IN THE HUB
Boston is a long
way from L.A., but Beantown has often basked in the glow of
the Hollywood spotlight. For every stinker like Celtic Pride
that’s filmed here, there’s a Good Will Hunting or Mystic
River—not to mention the Boston-based TV shows of locally
bred David E. Kelley (“The Practice,” “Ally McBeal”). In
that spirit, here’s a few Hub dining and drinking
destinations made famous on the small and large screens.
- CHEERS
84 Beacon St., 617-227-9605; Faneuil Hall Marketplace,
617-227-1050. The former Bull and Finch Pub on Beacon
Hill, inspiration for the long-running sitcom, has
become a top tourist draw, even spawning a second
location more like the one on television.
- L STREET TAVERN
195 L St., South
Boston, 617-268-4335. Although it doesn’t serve food
(except Sundays during football season), longtime
patrons will serve up stories of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck
and Robin Williams—who all spent time here during the
filming of Good Will Hunting—with a pint or two of ale.
- DOYLE'S CAFE
3484 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, 617-524-2345.
Films and shows from The Brink’s Job (1979) to Celtic
Pride (1996) to Mystic River (opening October 15
nationwide) to Fox-TV’s “Boston Public” have featured
the genuine charm of this storied Irish pub.
- THE GREEN DRAGON
TAVERN
11 Marshall St.,
617-367-0055. Already famed as the 18th century hangout
of Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty, this pub is now
the centerpiece of the new Lenny Clarke sitcom “It’s All
Relative” on ABC-TV.
- SOUTH STREET DINER
178 Kneeland St., 617-350-0028. This landmark,
24-hour, old-fashioned diner was used recently in the
bilingual Spanish/English indie film The Blue Diner
(2001).
