Fireplaces
Since most
hallmarks of winter seem designed to make us
uncomfortable—shoveling out your car plowed in by several
feet of snow, for example—it’s nice to be reminded of the
few things that make the wait for spring a little easier:
Namely, restaurants with roaring fireplaces to warm your
toes by. Here are five with a spot by the hearth.
- BEACON HILL BISTRO
25 Charles St., 617-723-1133. This French-inspired
bistro serves everything from brunch to late-night dinner.
And thanks to its large fireplace, upscale dining and
comfort go hand-in-hand.
- HUNGRY I
71 1/2 Charles
St., 617-227-3524. Considered by many to be one of
Boston’s most romantic restaurants, Hungry i boasts not
one but three working fireplaces that provide just the
right ambiance for its country French fare served in the
heart of Beacon Hill.
- JAMES’S
GATE
5–11 McBride St., Jamaica Plain, 617-983-2000. Not all
Irish pubs are created equal. A trip to James’s Gate will
prove as much, though it’s hard to decide why we love it
most—the ski lodge-esque environment or its
bargain-friendly entrees like the fish and chips and steak
au poivre.
- ROUGE
480 Columbus Ave., 617-867-0600. The food at this eatery
is all southern comfort, with a barbeque-heavy menu and
cajun classics including fried catfish. But with its deep
red walls and fireplace, Rouge belongs right here in
Boston, where we know how to heat things up even when its
snowy outside.
- UPSTAIRS ON THE
SQUARE
91 Winthrop St., Cambridge, 617-864-1933. This Harvard
Square institution moved from the Hasty Pudding to its new
space a few years ago complete with fireplace intact. But
even with its funky decor, the focus remains on its fine,
New American cuisine. —Christine Celli
