 CLASSIC
CAFES
Cafes can be the
answer to a multitude of daily predicaments. They’re where
you savor the daily newspaper and your morning cup of joe; a
place to revitalize with a quick meal; even an evening
alternative to the pub scene. Bring the Sartre or just your
weary bones and one of the following five will offer the
perfect respite.
- Cafe Pamplona
12 Bow St., Cambridge, 617-547-2763. This tiny,
quirky, Spanish-inspired cafe has been a
home-away-from-home for bookish Harvard folks for
decades. We love it for its Old World feel and good
strong coffee. A patio offers outdoor seating on warmer
days, but inside is where the scene is at its best.
- Garden of Eden
571 Tremont St., South End, 617-247-8377. The curbside
tables make this spot the tops in people-watching, but
it’s also a food lovers’ paradise thanks to the
desserts, salads and sandwiches freshly made from
top-notch imported ingredients.
- Caffe Vittoria
294 Hanover St., North End, 617-227-7606. If your
sweet tooth needs satiating, this Italian cafe will do
the trick—especially as an after dinner spot (it’s open
until 1 a.m.). The desserts are just as good as the
uber-popular Mike’s Pastries down the street, but here
you can actually get a seat.
- Other Side Cosmic
Cafe
407 Newbury St., 617-536-9477. The only eatery on
Newbury Street on the other side of Mass. Ave., this
aptly named cafe lures in the hip college and
twentysomething crowd with smoothies, a
vegetarian-friendly menu and cheap beer. The loud music
may not be for everyone, but the teens in your life will
be right at home.
- Trident Booksellers &
Cafe
338 Newbury St., 617-267-8688. Similar to The Other
Side, Trident looks to feed your body and your brain.
Pick up a good book, park yourself in the diner-esque
cafe section and quietly nosh on the kind of food your
New Age aunt might serve.
