A Hot Corner Bar

McGreevy’s 3rd Base Saloon
911 Boylston St.
617-262-0911

After two recent World Series wins, the business of catering to Red Sox fans is a good one in which to be. New Boylston Street taproom McGreevy’s 3rd Base Saloon is no fly-by-night bandwagon joint, though—the original opened in 1894, and was home to old-school Sox fans the “Royal Rooters,” who cheered for the likes of Babe Ruth and Cy Young until Prohibition ended the fun in 1930. Today, Ken Casey of Boston rockers the Dropkick Murphys co-owns the new McGreevy’s, which is peppered with vintage Sox memorabilia and serves delicious pub food, including an all-day Irish breakfast. Dress code is casual, but we wouldn’t recommend pinstripes.

People Get Reggae

One Love— A Reggae Cabaret
Stuart Street Playhouse
July 11 & 12

People associate the soul-pleasing sounds of great reggae more with beachside bars than theatres, but the music of the islands finally gets its moment in the spotlight with One Love—A Reggae Cabaret, a new show debuting July 11 & 12 at the Stuart Street Playhouse. This musical narrative explores the lives of a college-bound woman and her wise Jamaican aunt against a tuneful backdrop that traces the evolution of reggae itself. The New York-based Reggaelution Band (pictured) provides the show’s soundtrack, performing both original songs and covers of reggae legends like Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff. And with the Playhouse lobby boasting pre-show music, tropical refreshments and displays of traditional Jamaican crafts, reggae fans are sure to feel the Love. Refer to theater listing.

Cocktail of the Week

The Achilles Heel
Persephone
283 Summer St.
617-695-2251

Okay, so we don’t commonly think of the ancient Greeks when pondering a cocktail list, but (not to go all My Big Fat Greek Wedding on you or anything) the word “libation” actually comes from a Greek word meaning a “ritual pouring of a drink as an offering to God.” Trendy new Fort Point eatery/lounge Persephone takes this knowledge to heart with its mythically tasty Achilles Heel. This mixture of Hangar One Mandarin vodka, Sauza Hornitos tequila, Miller’s gin, Metusalem rum, pomegranate liqueur, sour mix and a splash of Coca-Cola is a complicated cocktail with a simply delicious taste. One sip and you’re sure to develop a fatal weakness for this heroic concoction.
